Programming Executive - Africa
A + E Networks are looking for a Programming Executive to be based in our South Africa office.

Working closely with programming teams locally and in the UK, you will deliver programming to four channels in Africa, including coordinating acquisition of content, and local programming for our channels.

A + E Networks are looking for a Programming Executive to be based in our African office to oversee the programming function.
You will be working closely with the relevant programming teams in the UK office as well as the local managers to identify and ensure delivery of programming to feed the 4 channels in the African territory. This includes coordinating the acquisition of content, as well as identifying local programming for our channels.

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Work closely with the General Manager, Scheduling Manager and Marketing Manager to develop an effective programming strategy for all channels operated out of South Africa

  • Work closely with the regional Programming Managers and Content Acquisitions team based in London to identify, screen and evaluate potential content from the PSA and 3rd parties in line with the programming strategy of the individual channel

  • Liaise frequently and maintain a close and positive working relationship with the regional team in London to identify and resolve any issues relating to content for the A+E channels operated out of South Africa

  • Work closely with the Programming and Acquisitions team to maintain an accurate record of the pipeline of content and relevant information to effectively support the scheduling and marketing teams

  • Clearly communicate the programming strategy of the channels to all key stakeholders to enable them to effectively support the channel content requirements

  • Work with the Head of Scheduling and the General Manager to effectively manage the content budget

  • Work cooperatively with key contacts in MarComms and Ad Sales to ensure all content is fully supported with the appropriate assets and information

  • Maintain regular communication with the regional Programming and Acquisition teams to co-ordinate and advise on the supply and delivery of all content to meet schedule and TX requirements.

Original Content:

  • Identify and develop local content ideas from the local production industry to support the programming strategy of the channels

  • Develop relationships with local producers and other key stakeholders in the local production industry

  • Work closely with the General Manager and VP Programming to identify and negotiate local production deals with producers

  • Communicate major deal terms and programme information to internal stakeholders including Legal & Business Affairs

  • Manage the process to ensure  the delivery of original local productions in accordance with the A+E requirements

  • Maintain regular communication channels with Media Operations to ensure the timely delivery and co-ordination of assets for original productions

  • Provide editorial guidance to producers to ensure delivery of original commissions in line with the requirements of the channel

  • Provide support to producers for original commissions, answering ad-hoc queries and resolving administration issues

  • Respond to queries from MarComms, ~Scheduling and any other appropriate stakeholders regarding commissioned content

  • Work closely with the Head of Marketing and Sponsorships and the General Manager to effectively identify and support sponsorship and funding opportunities for original content.

Additional Duties:

  • Maintain a good working knowledge of the South African and broader African television markets

  • Maintain a good working knowledge of content trends locally and internationally

  • Present to internal and external stakeholders key information and updates on content

  • Support the local and London based teams in their duties, as required

  • Support the development of business cases where necessary to enable content acquisition or commissioning decisions.

Person Specification:

  • Demonstrable understanding of programme rights and production terminology

  • Demonstrable understanding of content production, particularly in the South African market

  • Strong administrative and organisational skills; to complete tasks / achieve objectives within specified / business critical deadlines

  • Good computer skills: knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Word etc.

  • Strong communication skills; to effectively liaise with people across the business and with external stakeholders

  • At least 5 years’ experience within a broadcast/ production/distribution environment

  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with both external and internal stakeholders

  • Ability to manage workload and work across multiple projects and to tight deadlines, with the flexibility to cope with changing priorities

  • Demonstrable experience of content production for television

  • Pro-active team player

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
