MCR Operator (Trainee)
We are seeking a MCR Operator (Trainee) to assist in the smooth running of the Comux Network Operations Centre, Birmingham, providing 24/7 broadcast operations to circa 34 channels on the UK DTT platform.
About Us
Comux UK is the licensed multiplex operator for the Local TV network in the UK.  It broadcasts on the Freeview DTT platform and in addition to the local TV services also carries several network commercial services.  Comux manages the end-to-end process encompassing the contribution networks from the Local TV licensees, compression, distribution and onward transmission to each of the licensed areas in the UK from its Birmingham Network Operations Centre.

About the Role
To assist in the smooth running of the Comux Network Operations Centre in Birmingham, which provides 24/7 broadcast operations to circa 34 channels on the UK DTT platform.  Hence 100% availability of its services is the ultimate aim.  

The technical area uses the latest technology encompassing media asset management, storage, automaton, playout, DVB multiplexing and monitoring facilities, scheduling systems, automation, encoding and multiplex, SDI routing, IP contribution and distribution networks, plus all other associated aspects that are necessary to support Comux’s broadcast operations.

Responsibilities & Duties:
  • To liaise with other team members, including interacting with clients and
  • supplier organisations.
  • Assist in the monitoring and provision of 1st line support of service contribution, coding and multiplex to Comux customers
  • Check, and where appropriate, edit EPG schedules.
  • Log issues, incidents and activities in accordance with policies.
  • Fault-find and escalate to appropriate levels for all technical facilities at the centre.
  • Provide first line fault identification and resolution as necessary.
  • Ensure technical compliance of all materials to Ofcom requirements.
  • To stay up-to-date with all new technological advances and have a willingness to undergo technical training and/or other training as per the requirements of the post.
  • To assist in the delivery of monthly reports to the Comux Board of Directors and other stakeholders as appropriate.
  • To assist in the promotion of an effective safety, health and environment culture to ensure a safe and healthy working environment within the facility.
  • To monitor and analyse the current systems and operations, ensuring maximum effectiveness.
  • To work with the Senior MCR Manager and other staff to promote policies to ensure the continuing developmental success of Local Television in the UK.
  • As with all MCR roles, flexibility and availability outside of office hours will be a fundamental part of the responsibilities.
  • To carry out other reasonable tasks as required by the Senior MCR Manager.

About You
Key Skills  & Experience:
  • Computing skills. Including a general understanding of operating systems and IP networking.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of broadcast systems.
  • To be able to demonstrate technical knowledge of contribution and distribution circuits, coding andmultiplex processes, routers, automation, asset management and broadcast servers.
  • Ability to prioritise workload.
  • Able to work well under pressure.
  • Must be highly organised, accurate and pay attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Able to work well in a team and on their own.

Desirable:
  • Degree or HND in Broadcast Engineering/Technology.
  • Previous experience in MCR operations.
  • Knowledge of DVB-T distribution.

Conditions of Service:
  • The job is a shift-based role including weekend and night shifts. 
  • It will be offered initially for a 6-month probationary/training period.
