Head of Production - Dubbing

We need an experienced dubbing professional, who is able to lead a team, think creatively, have access to the right talent, and demonstrate commercial awareness.

You will need to show passion and imagination, and have a desire to become part of an exciting new chapter in the content localisation field.

About the Role

Key Accountabilities:

  • Configure, build and manage the dubbing team (PMs, Casting Manager, etc.), utilising internal resources, identifying potential and maximising skills, and sourcing new talent as the business grows.
  • Undertake full responsibility for ensuring all production projects, including dubbing, are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Liaise with the Technical team (Dir. of Technical Services and engineers) to select the right technical personnel for jobs, and guarantee smooth delivery of assets.
  • Be responsible for pricing and quoting for all in-house production related to English dubbing, VO and AD projects, and for establishing internal budget frameworks (e.g. right level of talent, etc.)
  • Put together the right production team for each job (allocating work to PMs, Casting Manager, coordinators, technical team, etc.)
  • Go-to person for any particular question / concern throughout the production process both by the client, talent or production and technical teams.
  • Work with Casting Manager and Vendor Manager to grow our talent pool of directors, actors, adaptors, musical directors, etc. in the UK.
  • Work with Casting Manager on selection of best creative team for each project, depending on genre, language combination, type of project e.g. high-profile, special requirements (songs or child actors), etc.
  • Negotiate rates with star talent and direct contact with client regarding costs.
  • Define best practices and workflows for all in-house production services, and ensure maximum efficiency to hit or exceed profit margin.
  • Establish client-specific internal workflows where necessary, and incorporate into client bible and department bible.
  • Work in close collaboration with all other internal teams in terms of joint processes, such as QCs done by the Translation team, Finance or Technical teams.
  • Carry out production evaluations and financial monitoring of projects, as well as invoicing, and undertake responsibility for profitability target.
  • Track weekly progress of each project to make sure they are being run efficiently, anticipate risks and take action to avoid any potential losses.
  • Liaise with clients throughout production process on creative brief, approach and approvals.
  • Monitor live recording sessions, editing and mixing to ensure we are being efficient, and adhere to VSI’s quality standards and specs, in addition to clients’ standards and specs.
  • Take responsibility, alongside the Casting Manager, for all documentation required from talent and staff, such as NDAs, AoRs, freelancer agreements, etc. and make sure all Health & Safety and Security guidelines are followed by all involved in production.
  • Work closely with Director of Technical Services on ensuring the right technical skills are in place to support dubbing needs (audio engineers, editors, etc.)
  • Report monthly to Director of Operations and MD on department key wins and challenges, and provide solutions and ideas to improve processes and weekly cost report on live projects against budgets.
  • Carry out team’s appraisals twice a year, set up objectives for each member of the team and provide mentoring and support.


Person specification

In order to be successful for this role, candidates must demonstrate the following:

  • 10+ years’ experience in the dubbing and localisation industry, working as an actor, director or producer. 
  • Excellent strategic, planning and organisational skills.
  • Solution-focused, highly motivated and results-orientated.
  • A creative flare and understanding of the creative process.
  • Technical production expertise, and the ability to develop and improve workflows and implement new ways of working.
  • An ability to build, nurture and maintain relationships with talent (actors, directors, adaptors, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Pro Tools, VoiceQ (or similar dubbing recording software), AVID, etc.
  • Strong management and leadership skills, with excellent communication skills.
  • Understanding of commercial pressures and budget control.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Lead by example, act with honesty, discretion and integrity at all times.
  • Any additional languages would be a plus.
