Head of Systems Engineering

This is a key, management role at Encompass.

As Head of Systems Engineering you will be responsible for leading the Systems Engineering team and taking ownership of the build, deployment, and 3rd line support of technical solutions across a range of systems, networks, & software environments.

Hours: 37.5 hrs per week. Monday to Friday (+ on call as required)


Reporting to: Design & Delivery Director

Location: Hybrid Worker (Chiswick, London & Homeworking)

Main Purpose: 
Reporting to the Design & Delivery Director, the role works collaboratively in a high-pressure ever-changing environment, to ensure the delivery of new services that meet the customers’ requirements, the architectural vision and agreed timelines and budgets. 

Systems Engineers under this role, take the high-level designs from the Solutions Architects and create and manage detailed designs for service implementation and support. Project delivery is overseen by the PMO, and as such, the Head of Systems Engineering will need to work closely with the Head of Project Management to ensure an optimal delivery process. 

The Head of Systems Engineering will also need to work closely with the technical support and operational team leads across the region to ensure as seamless as possible transition of new services into a live environment as well as providing ongoing 3rd line support as needed. 

The Head of Systems Engineering will be an experienced engineering professional with the ability to provide support, guidance, leadership and mentoring to a multi-disciplined team. The role requires extensive technical knowledge of a wide range of technical systems, customer relationship skills, commercial awareness, and a strong collaborative engineering approach to resolving issues across multiple teams and different departments. 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of Systems Engineers across a range of technical disciplines, providing mentorship, guidance, support, and coaching
  • Provision of build, deployment and 3rd line support services for customers and internal stakeholders, including product and infrastructure development
  • Work with the Solutions Architects to provide support for new bids and opportunities, advising on the existing estate as required
  • Ensure the production of low-level, detailed designs (i.e., CAD drawings, cable schedules, process diagrams) to expand upon the high-level designs provided by the Solutions Architects, including providing equipment recommendations where necessary
  • Ensure successful handover from Systems Engineering to the support and operational teams, including documentation and training (where required)
  • Take ownership and develop best practice for Systems Engineering processes across EMEA and working with other EDM regional teams where appropriate
  • Ensure all work is carried out to EDM standards and agreed customer service levels
  • Specify, procure, and oversee relevant engineering services from third party vendors and manage vendor technical and contractual performance
  • Further the development of reporting/alerting systems and operational dashboards, and evangelise the use of real-time and historical performance data to analyse the behaviourof technical systems and applications
  • Support, and where necessary lead, customer meetings for services provided by the Systems Engineering department, and provide reports as required
  • Actively keep up to date with Encompass technology strategy to ensure alignment in all deployments
  • Ensure the accuracy of all documentation provided as part of any deployment and actively maintain all documentation alongside the support teams
  • Ensure compliance with all Encompass policies and procedures as they pertain to Systems Engineering, providing feedback to assist in evolving these in line with business needs and/or identifying any potential optimisations
  • Encourage a culture of openness, honesty, and continual improvement.


  • Ideally educated to degree level or recognised equivalent experience
  • Substantial relevant experience in broadcast engineering
  • Broad knowledge of, and experience in, a wide gamut of broadcast / OTT systems and technologies
  • Strong leadership and people management skills with an ability to create a culture of continuous improvement, where team members consistently push for improved performance
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain a calm and level head under immense pressure
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritise your own workload as well as that of the team
  • Demonstrable experience of working closely with customers and operations in a service management environment
  • Demonstrable experience of maintaining mission critical infrastructure in operational broadcast data centres
  • Experience of managing commercial and contractual relationships with third party suppliers and partners
  • Team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills and a focus on cross team collaboration.

Specific Technical Experience:

  • Broad knowledge of a wide range of technologies including, but not limited to:
    • Linear playout automation and graphics overlay systems
    • File based workflow orchestration and processing
    • Encoding/Decoding/Transcoding for both linear and non-linear workflows
    • Contribution/Distribution links (e.g., fibre/satellite/Zixi/SRT)
    • OTT distribution (e.g., JITP/DRM/DAI)
    • Video/Audio switching and routing
    • IP networks – particularly with reference to real time video and audio flows using
    • SMPTE 2022-2/6/7 or SMPTE 2110 with PTP
    • Cloud infrastructure
    • Object storage
    • Real-time monitoring and control systems
    • Deployment automation (Ansible/Terraform)
    • CI/CD techniques and practices.
