Technical Manager

You will ensure that studios, MCR and Galley are fully operational and meet the requirements of the news team and clients.  


You will build relationships across departments and with external stakeholders and suppliers to maximise output, keep costs down and improve efficiencies across the business.

The London Live team

Available on Freeview Channel 8, Sky 117, Virgin 159 and truly multiplatform from launch, London Live broadcasts a mix of original entertainment programming, live events and music, cutting edge film making and documentaries, alongside 1 hour of live news every day.

This role is within the London Live News Team and will support the making of the News and Current affairs content as well as the hire of the studio to external clients. You’ll be the main point of contact for all IT and technical issues and advice.


About you:

  • Background in Engineering in a live broadcast environment
  • Passionate about technology and implementing it to improve efficiency and output
  • Can Escalate issues to suppliers and manufacturers
  • Operational experience in a live environment
  • Experience with postproduction and asset delivery workflows
  • (Adobe/FTP)
  • Experience with a Cloud/Local Hybrid Enviromint
  • Experience with managing a local area Network and some IT admin experience
  • Ability to Problem Solve in a complex broadcast environment
  • Experience with managing and developing a small team
  • Organised and Reliable
  • Project management experience
  • Passionate with a ‘can do’ attitude and be flexible with time and duties in a fast-paced environment
  • Passion for News and current affairs
  • Adaptable to situations and projects that are outside of the usual remit
  • Computer literate with the use of mac and windows OS
  • Experience as a Broadcast Engineer and IT support who can come in and make a difference to our approach / system.


Job purpose


This role is an exciting opportunity to manage a small team of MSOs in the production of the News Content. You will ensure that studios, MCR and Galley are fully operational and meet the requirements of the news team and clients. 


You will build relationships across departments and with external stakeholders and suppliers to maximise output, keep costs down and

improve efficiencies across the whole business


Key responsibilities:

  • A flexible approach to work, primarily ensuring all Studio and tech infrastructure is operational and ready for broadcast
  • Ensure that the delivery of content is managed well and uninterrupted
  • Work with external transmission, IT and suppliers in the development of the channel
  • Project manage broadcast events i.e. Chinese New Year, Notting Hill Carnival or Miss World
  • Project manage installations and new workflow implementations
  • Onsite contact for all issues
  • Support core broadcast infrastructure including robotic cameras, vision mixers, routers, recorders, talkback, VT playout, cloud programme playout
  • Long form/short form editing for the channel mostly news and current affairs
  • Manage the look and branding of the channel working with the Head of News.


Skills and experience:

  • Strong Background in broadcast engineering with the ability to diagnose, escalate and solve technical and logistical issues as necessary, whilst finding alternative methods or workarounds in the interim
  • Experience leading a small technical team
  • Experience with live and postproduction workflows, equipment and software in particular Adobe Premiere, Tiger Bridge and FTP
  • Demonstrable experience in at least one operational role (Robotic Cameras / Audio Mixing / Vision Mixing)
  • Ability to develop a team including non-technical roles to create engaging error free and technically consistent news programming
  • Ability to manage small to large projects, including broadcast equipment upgrades, Software rolls out and upgrades, desk moves and new installations
  • Managing the coverage of live OB events.


Desirable experience:

  • Experience in more than one operational role (Robotic Cameras / Audio Mixing / Vision Mixing)
  • Experience dealing with high profile customers
  • Experience with dealing with studio guests
  • Experience in camera robotics including programming and fault finding
  • Experience with Adobe After Effects
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience with website development, CMS and SEO optimization
  • Experience with Microsoft Admin Centre
  • Some experience working in News and Current Affairs and a knowledge of basic media Law
  • Experience with remote working through virtual machines like Axure WVDs
  • AutoCAD experience
  • Studio and gallery design
  • Experience with managing an office move.
