The Role: This role shapes how Manchester United connects with its worldwide fanbase, accelerates commercial growth through content monetisation, and delivers emotionally resonant storytelling across all platforms.
Reporting to Chief Communications Officer, the Media Director oversees the entire media content ecosystem — including Social Media, Content Strategy & Programming, Video Production, and Originals & Studio. Leading a team of 35+ talented professionals, the Media Director crafts and executes an ambitious content strategy that positions Manchester United as a global frontrunner in digital media, fan engagement, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities: - Set the Vision: Define and deliver an ambitious media and content strategy that supports Manchester United’s brand, football, and commercial objectives
- Inspire and Lead: Manage a multi-disciplinary team across Social Media, Content Programming, Video Production, and Studio to deliver impactful, creative, and timely content
- Engage Our Fans: Ensure content reflects the voice and values of the club, and resonates with our diverse, global audience across men’s, women’s, and academy football
- Drive Growth: Unlock the commercial potential of content through partnerships, platforms, digital products, and new revenue opportunities
- Drive Collaboration: Work closely with all departments including Football, Business, Commercial, and Communications to align messaging and campaigns
- Champion Innovation: Embrace emerging formats, tools, and platforms to keep Manchester United at the forefront of media trends
- Plan with Precision: Oversee robust planning and workflow management across teams, ensuring clarity, accountability, and on-time delivery
- Make Data-Driven Decisions: Leverage insights and analytics to continuously improve content performance and audience relevance.
The Person: We are looking for someone who: - Significant experience in a senior media or content leadership role, ideally within sport, entertainment, or a global consumer brand
- A proven track record in developing and executing successful content strategies across digital, social, and video
- Strong commercial understanding and experience in content monetisation (e.g. sponsorship, subscriptions, licensing, platform revenue)
- Excellent team leadership and people management skills
- Outstanding storytelling instincts and creative vision
- Deep understanding of audiences, fan behaviours, and digital engagement strategies
- Calm, focused, and adaptable with excellent planning and organisational skills
- Genuine passion for football, including the men’s and women’s game, and a strong appreciation of Manchester United’s heritage and fanbase.
