The Senior Journalist Team Manager (Social Media) will lead BBC Learning English’s social media presence for English language teaching.

CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent, Part-time (17.5 hours per week, working half a day Wednesday, full day on Thursday and Friday)
DEPARTMENT: BBC News 
LOCATION: London
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £44,000 - £54,000 (pro ratad) depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

The Senior Journalist Team Manager (Social Media) will ensure a unified and engaging experience across platforms, aligned with strategic goals and tailored to target audiences. The role focuses on delivering high-quality, creative content that boosts reach and drives traffic across BBC services. As the editorial lead, they also hold formal line management responsibilities, guiding the team to meet performance and editorial standards.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Lead and manage the social media team, overseeing daily operations, allocating tasks, and ensuring high-quality output.
  • Create and adapt engaging English language teaching content for social media, including scripting, filming, editing, and producing multimedia assets.
  • Commission and curate content that meets audience needs and adheres to BBC editorial standards.
  • Write platform-optimised copy that aligns with the approved tone and style guide.
  • Produce and present live social media broadcasts in collaboration with production and editorial teams.
  • Monitor performance metrics, audience behaviour, and social trends to inform strategy and identify growth opportunities.
  • Ensure all social activity complies with BBC guidelines, promotes diversity, and supports the wider department’s goals and policies.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: 

  • Hold a DELTA or equivalent ELT qualification, with native-level fluency in English and excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Proven experience developing and executing social media strategies for English learners, using analytics to guide decisions and grow communities.
  • Strong understanding of international ELT audiences and markets, with recent experience creating successful content for platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
  • Skilled in managing teams, resources, and budgets to deliver high-quality content aligned with BBC standards.
  • Creative writing ability tailored to diverse learner needs and platforms, with accuracy, clarity, and engaging style.
  • Proficient in graphic design principles and tools (e.g. Photoshop), with a strong visual sense for producing educational materials. 
  • Experience in the creation of video and audio content using various production tools as appropriate
  • Demonstrates adaptability, teamwork, and a commitment to diversity, safety, and continuous improvement in digital media environments.
