News Editor, Vertical Video

We’re looking for a News Editor to lead a pioneering team to deliver content across our platforms - from the video playlist, to elsewhere on site and on social, including a range of planned and breaking news carousels.

  • CONTRACT TYPE: 12 month attachment/FTC, Full-time 
  • DEPARTMENT: BBC News 
  • LOCATION: Salford or Cardiff
  • PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £60,000- £75,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

We’re revolutionising the way we use video to tell stories in BBC News. With the ever increasing consumption of vertical video, we’re looking for a News Editor to lead a pioneering team to deliver content across our platforms - from the video playlist, to elsewhere on site and on social, including a range of planned and breaking news carousels. 


You’ll lead colleagues working across platforms, and have the ability to keep across multiple content areas to ensure the best clips are reaching our audiences. You will collaborate with teams in News, Sounds, Sport, iPlayer and others, every day.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • As News Editor you’ll lead the team, which will be operational across the week and weekend, overseeing colleagues to drive growth of viewing and engagement
  • You’ll champion the team across the BBC and News to showcase BBC content at its best, working with colleagues to identify great vertical video content
  • You’ll be creative in the way you think about commissioning and storytelling, experimenting with different ways to reach audiences
  • You’ll lead by example, sharing knowledge and skills with the team and colleagues in other teams to produce content to the highest standard
  • You’ll lead the facilitation of change, clearly communicating and distributing best practices between teams
  • You’ll be confident at overseeing the scripting, producing, and editing of video – guiding staff at all levels to deliver in a way that works for audiences
  • This role will involve some weekend and shift working, driven by the news agenda. 


YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • You’ll have significant experience in leading teams with tight deadlines – reacting to breaking news whilst safeguarding the production of other daily content
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of more than one team
  • Deliver and oversee content of the highest standard, within the required 
  • timeframe using available resources
  • Thorough understanding of how to tell stories for different audiences, 
  • with an emphasis on making news and other content, accessible and engaging to a broad range of audiences
  • A detailed knowledge and demonstrable experience of analytics and using audience research to develop ideas and grow target audiences
  • Must be proficient in Non-Linear Editing systems, specialising in vertical video production workflows
  • Ability to oversee allocation of work to a team and check progress; ensuring high-quality professional contribution of staff and outstanding output.
