MCR Engineer

We are looking for an MCR Engineer to join our team.

The position is based at our Brookmans Park site in Hertfordshire and operates in shift pattern.

The Role

The work covers a wide spectrum of satellite and broadcast operations including:

  • Configuring Broadcast Baseband and satellite RF equipment to carry ad-hoc digital video and data services.
  • Liaising with clients, suppliers by telephone and email in sometimes stressful and demanding
  • situations.
  • First level fault finding on digital video and data permanent services.
  • First level fault finding on microwave RF and antenna control systems.
  • Dataminer Operation and Administration.


  • Setting up Baseband and RF equipment to carry transmit and receive video services
  • First level fault finding on digital video services
  • First level fault finding on RF systems
  • First level fault finding on antenna control systems
  • Dataminer administration & operation.
  • Dealing with terrestrial circuit suppliers
  • Use of Transport Stream & SDI video test equipment
  • Ensure that permanent digital video services are operating correctly and carry out timely restoration actions in the event of any problems.
  • Ensure that ad-hoc video traffic is monitored at the start of every booking for quality, and that irregularities are pursued before seen by clients.
  • Make timely and accurate entries in the ad-hoc bookings system
  • Taking a proactive attitude to the pursuing of on-going faults
  • Log traffic affecting events, carrier activations and deactivations, and changes to systems.
  • Ensure where possible that work carried out on systems by personnel other than Operations is documented by use of the Authority to Work procedure.
  • Carry out regular activities as described in the Maintenance Procedures when these fall on your shift duties.
  • Create and update documentation and Tickets as required.
  • Complete checks as required.
  • Respond speedily to alarms and phone calls.
  • Communicate with customers, service providers and colleagues in a polite and professional manner.
  • Carry out work in a safe manner, with particular note of any relevant safety documents that may be issued.
  • Assist SMCR Deputy Managers & Head of Operations in meeting Operations Group’s overall objectives.

About You

Key Qualities & Competencies:

  • Candidates must work well within a team but also be confident when working alone.
  • Good interpersonal skills (politeness, friendliness) are required as there are frequent communication with clients, suppliers, colleagues etc by telephone and email.
  • An ability to work methodically and when under pressure to a time deadline is essential.
  • Understanding of DVB principals, digital modulation, forward error correction etc.
  • Operation of DVB transport stream analysers, Nimbra network & multiplexers etc.
  • Understanding of modulators, up-converters, down-converters, HPAs, amplifier intermodulation, back-off etc.
  • Antenna control systems – understanding of principals of tracking, beacon receivers etc.
  • Dataminer administration & operation.
  • Basic understanding of terrestrial services and interfaces, testing on these lines etc.
  • Use of Transport Stream and SDI video test equipment – spectrum analysers, waveform monitors etc.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • A degree or equivalent in communications or electronic engineering would be desirable.
  • An ability to cope with sometimes demanding and stressful situations is essential.
