Systems Administrator, Technology (Media Centre)
Prime Focus Technologies is opening a state-of-the-art Media Centre in Leeds to deliver Media & Online services for Channel 4.
 
This is a fantastic opportunity to join our brand new team at the heart of Channel 4's outsourced content operations.

Overview

The Systems Administrator is a critical role, which maintains, upgrades and manages the software, hardware and networks supporting the Leeds Media Centre. It involves installing and configuring hardware, software and networks, monitoring system performance and troubleshooting issues and ensuring security and efficiency of the IT infrastructure.

 

Resourcefulness and flexibility are necessary skills in the role. The ideal candidate should be able to diagnose and resolve problems quickly and effectively mindful of the time-critical live media operation depending upon the systems.

 

The role operates within a small on-site team in Leeds backed up by PFT’s global support functions. As such, it is vital to communicate effectively with a wide variety of geographically diverse interdisciplinary teams and local users. The ability to work calmly and quickly under pressure, prioritising effectively to reflect the operational needs is essential. The goal is to ensure the technology infrastructure for our Media Centre in Leeds runs smoothly and efficiently.


Principal Accountabilities

  • Install and configure software and hardware including virtual, covering the full range of IT and Media Technologies.
  • Install & manage network switches and firewalls.
  • Set up and manage active directory accounts and workstations.
  • Monitor performance and maintain systems according to requirements.
  • Troubleshoot issues and outages.
  • Ensure robust security of data and media through access controls, backups and firewalls and through robust processes and diligence.
  • Upgrade software and hardware in available downtime.
  • Develop expertise to train staff on new technologies.
  • Build and keep updated an internal wiki with technical documentation, manuals and IT policies.
  • Deliver routine performance reports, following up on incidents and planning corrective work with stakeholders.
  • Ensure incidents which impact the operation are clearly communicated and recorded.
  • Develop, manage and maintain excellent relationships with colleagues at all levels, integrate well into teams. Demonstrate excellent communication skills and emotional intelligence with others.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and manufacturers for third party support.
  • Maintain knowledge of the client contracts in order to ensure systems support agreed service levels.
  • Understand operational workflows, software and systems, including details of interfaces and handoffs with clients and other third parties. Is the systems subject matter expert on site.
  • Ensure Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans are in place and well understood and rehearsed.
  • Identifies commercial and operational opportunities presented by new technologies or ways of working and presents recommendations to drive efficiency or profit.
  • Such other related duties as the management may from time to time reasonably required to deliver the services to the customer.

 

Scope and Impact

The role is critical to the smooth operation of our 24 x 7 Media Centre and therefore directly affects reputation of PFT. The post holder must have high levels of personal integrity and is required to take a considerable level of personal responsibility for their work.  


Organised and systematic in approach, meticulous attention to detail and be able to work effectively under pressure, to tight deadlines and alone or as part of a team.

 

Relationships

  • Reports to the Facilities Manager as part of a small on-site team.
  • Supports the operational teams & Operations Manager delivering services for the customer.
  • Liaises with other departments including abroad in an operational setting.
  • Has regular and routine contact with customer representatives.

 

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

  • Proven experience as a System Administrator, Network Administrator or similar role.
  • Experience with VMWare, networks (LAN, WAN) and patch management.
  • Basic knowledge of system security (e.g., intrusion detection systems) and data backup/recovery.
  • Familiarity with Windows Desktops / Windows Servers / Linux.
  • Resourcefulness and problem-solving aptitude.
  • Must be able to work weekends and nights when required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • BSc/BA in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline; professional certification (e.g. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) or RedHat Certified Engineer) is an advantage.
  • Experience in an operational media environment is an advantage.

Details

Hours of work - Normally Monday to Friday office hours. To support the 24x7 nature of our customer's operation, this role will require some out of hours working.
