Role summary:
The Assistant Editor plays a key role in ensuring building the rundowns and last-mile delivery of editorial content. 

You will need an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of news production and editorial content creation alongside an intimate knowledge of how to manage a live show on GB News’ NRCS of choice. 

You have to ensure people in your team are assigned tasks needed to fill the gaps in the rundown you receive from the story editor, and you should use your editorial and creative judgement to use the full wealth of GB News’ products available on storyhub to enrich your rundown in coordination with your story editor. 

You must be able to identify potential issues with the instances in your rundown before taking it to the gallery and fix them in a timely manner well before the gallery is to receive your rundown.

Key responsibilities and main tasks:
  • To build exciting and compelling show rundowns that accurately reflect the tone and format of shows
  • Liaise with presenters to develop ideas for broadcast
  • React to breaking news as and when it happens
  • To check the rundowns you are assigned to, and ensure all details are fulfilled properly
  • To check the preparing rundown and see stories scheduled to your rundown by the story team
  • To move the stories to the ready rundown and arrange them according to GB News’ rundown structure
  • To interrogate the details of all instances both independently and in relation to each other to spot potential mistakes and issues and take steps to fix them before rundown is delivered to the gallery
  • To further improve the quality of the instances received from the story team and enrich their content in coordination with and with approval of the story editor
  • To ensure you produce enough content with the help of your rundown producer to make up the difference between the total time of the preparing rundown and the total time of the ready rundown
  • To communicate constantly & consistently with the story editor to ensure your Rundowns follow the editorial intentions of the broader newsroom
  • To be able to handle breaking news situations according to the protocol in a timely manner and while maintaining editorial standards
  • To manage the show live in the gallery
  • To manage the timing of the show properly and spot potential under/over scenarios well in advance and take professional well communicated steps to handle them before you get to them
  • To explore the story hub and find material produced elsewhere which can fit into and fill the gaps inside your Rundown
  • To ensure your Rundown producers are assigned tasks and to monitor and guide their performance on the shift
  • Work closely with the planning, newsgathering and operations
  • Fact-checking information and ensuring adherence to editorial guidelines including media law and Ofcom compliance
  • Other appropriate duties as required
  • Be an ambassador for GB News
