Studio Director

A Studio Director (SD) combines the technical and operational expertise of a sound engineer with studio production skills, to help realise the ambitions of the editorial team. 

  • CONTRACT TYPE: 6 month Fixed-term Contract/Attachment, Full-time 
  • DEPARTMENT: Media Operations Sound News
  • LOCATION: London Broadcasting House. This is a 24/7, 365 shift role that will be office based. Shift allowances will apply
  • PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £32,900 - £38,000 + London weighting depending on relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Studio Directors operate studio equipment in accordance with production requirements for transmissions and recordings effectively and efficiently, maximising all the technical resources available. 


We are also able to offer the opportunity to carry out sound duties in our TV Studios

Working closely together with our editorial colleagues, we co-create content reaching millions of people across the UK and the World daily.  The team is also responsible for the management of production services, editing and postproduction, stores, and some audio, fleet vehicles, and OB bases in England.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Operating the mixing desk and a variety of different studio equipment, the Studio Director is a vital role making everything you hear on the radio possible and is responsible for ensuring high quality audio ambitions are achieved by the on-air programme teams
  • Manage on-air guests and correspondents, keeping live programmes on track and to time whilst adding creative flair
  • Provide technical assistance to the editorial teams outside of the studio environment. There are many aspects to this element of the role, however, a Studio Director would be expected to regularly help connect guests through to studios for broadcast, fault-find with technical equipment, source and edit audio as well as record and mix a variety of podcasts
  • A logical approach to problem solving
  • Communicate effectively in pressurised situations. It is also important to develop and maintain good relations with programmes teams, representing the department in operational areas.

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Experience of live sound mixing, with an awareness and knowledge of visualised content
  • An interest in news and speech audio and/or experience of working with content producers to realise their programme ideas
  • Evidence of effectively working in a team
  • Examples of offering creative ideas in-line with relevant editorial priorities and supporting other members in a studio and production environment
  • Demonstrate an ability to organise and prioritise under pressure in an audio environment.
 
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
  • Interest in BBC audio content including music, drama, and podcasts
  • Leadership experience gained from a studio or audio production environment.
